GIOVANNA YATE GONZALEZ
Giovanna Yate Gonzalez is a lighting designer and multidisciplinary professional from Colombia, with a rich background as a dancer and teacher with over 10 years of experience in the performing arts industry. As a dancer, she had been a choreographic assistant and performer in the Colombian dance companies Concept Anvar and Dinamov Danza (2014-2017). These companies participated in several national festivals in different cities such as Bogotá, Cali and Tocancipá, in addition to international festivals in Sao Paulo-Brazil, Mazatlán-Mexico and San José-Costa Rica.
Since graduating of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), Giovanna has designed lighting for several notable productions including Siren Dance (Sydney Dance Company) and the award-winning show LUSH at Melbourne Fringe.
In 2023, she was selected for Malthouse Theatre's Besen Artistic Program. The following year, she worked as Associate Lighting Designer with Amelia Lever-Davidson on The Children's Bach. Her other credits include Coded for Midsumma Festival 2025 and Sad Eyes and Coded with choreographer Amelia O'Leary at Abbotsford Convent and DanceHouse.
Giovanna is currently part of the Melbourne Theatre Company's FUTURE CREATIVE program, where she continues to develop her craft. Her lighting designs often explore the relationship between light and movement, drawing on her background in dance. She enjoys collaborating with other artists to create clear, effective lighting that supports the storytelling on stage.
